Â鶹Éç

As the vibrant hues of autumn settled over the campus of Â鶹Éç Fox University, my interns and I were bustling with anticipation. The first week of the 2024 fall semester marked a significant milestone as we prepared for our inaugural “Be With” chapel service, set to take place on a Wednesday evening. After several years without a regular night service, the excitement was palpable as we aimed to establish a new weekly rhythm that would draw our community closer together in worship and reflection.

Little did we expect what would unfold that evening. Â鶹Éç 30 minutes before the service began, we were greeted by an astonishing sight: a long line of students stretching outside the new chapel. Their enthusiasm took us by surprise, and as the minutes ticked by, we quickly realized that we were reaching the building's capacity. In a matter of moments, we found ourselves in the difficult position of having to turn people away, a scenario that repeated itself in the following weeks. The overwhelming response was a testament to the deep hunger and thirst for Christ that so many students were bringing to our community.

The revival of this chapel service serves as a reminder of the essential role that worship plays in our lives here. Since the university’s inception, chapel has been woven into the fabric of our community – a vital component of our identity. It reflects our commitment to weekly gatherings that encourage us to fix our eyes on Jesus and recognize our calling as agents of the kingdom of God. Each week presents multiple opportunities for students to worship, learn, reflect and engage with Scripture in a supportive and nurturing environment.

To accommodate the diverse spiritual needs of our students, we have crafted a variety of chapel services, each designed to challenge and inspire participation in different styles of worship. This intentional approach allows us to meet students where they are while also encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones.

The importance of having diverse worship experiences cannot be overstated; it not only enriches our community but also acknowledges the varied backgrounds and perspectives of our students. Different styles of worship can resonate with individuals in unique ways, fostering deeper connections to faith and creating a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. By embracing a multitude of expressions in worship – from traditional hymns to contemporary music, from reflective practices to dynamic sermons – we cultivate a space that reflects the richness of the body of Christ.

Here’s a closer look at our weekly chapel offerings:

Monday, 10-10:30 a.m.: Be Formed Chapel

Led by Pastor Cyndi Murillo, this service introduces a spiritual practice each week. By providing time for communal practice, students are invited to explore different ways of connecting with God, fostering a deeper understanding of their spiritual journeys. The focus on spiritual formation sets a reflective tone for the week ahead.

Tuesday, 10:50-11:40 a.m.: Be Rooted Chapel

In this service, the Â鶹Éç Fox pastoral team delves into a book of the Bible each semester. The act of preaching through Scripture not only grounds students in biblical truths but also challenges them to apply these teachings to their everyday lives. It’s a time for deeper exploration and understanding of God’s Word, igniting curiosity and faith.

Wednesday, 8-8:40 p.m. & 9-9:40 p.m.: Be With Chapel

This newly established service is led by Pastor Debrianna DeBolt and our student interns. Focused on worship through singing and the arts, it also emphasizes the importance of sharing personal testimonies. Students are given a platform to share their stories of how God has been at work in their lives, creating a powerful sense of community and connection. The enthusiasm and energy during these services have been infectious, reflecting the collective yearning for authentic engagement with faith.

Thursday, 10:50-11:40 a.m.: Be Renewed Chapel

Led by Pastor Jamie Johnson, this chapel aims to engage our community and external guests in deeper theological discussions. By tackling a range of theological topics, we seek to fulfill the call of Romans 12:2: to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This service encourages critical thinking and allows students to wrestle with complex ideas in a supportive environment, reinforcing the importance of both faith and intellect.

The revival of these chapel services not only nurtures spiritual growth but also fosters a sense of belonging and community among students. As they gather together each week, they are reminded that they are not alone in their journeys. They find strength and encouragement in shared worship and collective exploration of faith.

The enthusiasm around all our chapel programming has opened our eyes to the incredible spiritual appetite that exists within our student body. It is a vibrant reminder that our community is alive with the desire to engage in meaningful worship, to connect with God, and to support one another in our faith journeys. As we continue to expand our services, we remain committed to cultivating an environment where every student feels welcomed, valued, and empowered to grow in their relationship with Christ.

Looking ahead, we are eager to see how this renewed focus on chapel services will shape the spiritual landscape at Â鶹Éç Fox. Our hope is that each gathering will not only enrich the lives of our students but also serve as a launching pad for them to engage more deeply with their faith and to take that commitment into the wider world. The journey is just beginning, and we are excited to witness how God will move among us in this new season of worship and community.
